Frankincense (also known as olibanum) is an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes, obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia. The word is from Old French franc encens (‘high-quality incense’). The meaning of ‘franc’ here is true, noble, pure.

The trees start producing resin at about eight to 10 years old. Tapping is done two to three times a year with the final taps producing the best tears due to their higher aromatic terpene, sesquiterpene and diterpene content. The more opaque resins are considered the best quality.

Myrrh  is a gum-resin extracted from a number of small, thorny tree species of the genus Commiphora.  Myrrh resin has been used throughout history as a perfume, incense and medicine. Myrrh is steeped in lore of ancient ceremonies, and it boasts many healing benefits that made it of high value in ancient times.

Myrrh gum, like frankincense is harvested by small cuts through the tree bark to bleed the gum from the sapwood. After the harvest, the gum becomes hard and glossy. The gum is yellowish and may be either clear or opaque. It darkens as it ages, and the aged myrrh is used in the powders for burning and added to cosmetics.
